Squirrels - Scouting for Four and Five Year Olds

Squirrel Scouts is the newest and youngest section of The Scout Association aiming to teach children aged four and five, skills that will last them for life, through fun and adventurous activities. Squirrel Scouts offers the best of scouts - learning by doing and getting into the great outdoors.

We know that the most fundamental connections are made during the precious, formative years before five years old. What happens then - positive or otherwise - stays with them for life, which is key in teaching skills for life.

This new provision is the culmination of more than two years piloting scouting for four and five year olds, involving experts in Early Years Development and Scouting as well as volunteers who started out with no experience of either. This is a wonderful new programme which really complements well, the work being done in the other sections of The Scout Association.

Unfortunately at 6th Bury St Edmunds St Mary's Scout Group, we do not currently have a Squirrel Scout Drey. This is because we need Volunteers to come forward in order to start a new Squirrel Scout Drey. These Volunteers do not need any prior experience, just a willingness to learn. We will provide full training free of charge as well as support and advice from experienced scouters in the group and district in addition to support through a Cohort system of up to ten Squirrel Dreys and a Cohort Coach. All sections in the group including a new Squirrel Scout Drey are supported by a Group Executive Committee/Trustee Board which is responsible for finance, insurance, provision and maintenance of venues and equipment and Governance of the Group.

Leaders are provided with an administration system which automates many day to day admin tasks and helps leaders keep tack of other admin tasks.

Potential Volunteers could come from existing parents within the group, parents of children wishing to join a Squirrel Scout Drey or from other members of the community, in short, they could be anyone who is interested.

If you are interested in becoming a Squirrel Scout Leader, or would like further information please contact Giles Lillistone, our Assistant Group Scout Leader at giles.lillistone@6thbsescouts.org.uk
